My car cranks many times before it starts up.?

When I turn my key the dash lights come on and everything is fine, but when i actually turn it over, it takes more cranks than usual to actually start it. Rather than the engine turning right when i turn the key, I have to hold it there for about 2 seconds. what do you think the problem is? It's an 87 honda prelude si
