Help with my back boiler.?

Hi there, I have recently moved into a house that has a fire with a back boiler. My question is this. On the top of it theres like a handle that slides in and out. I know one option is for the fire to heat the room and the opposite is for it to heat the back boiler. But I dont know which is which. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
