Can someone explain NASA's Ares and CEV. Do they go together?

They were originally intended to go together, with the CEV on top of an Ares I rocket. However, it seems likely the Ares I will be canceled. The Orion capsule (the CEV's later title) may live on in somewhat reduced capacity, as a cargo and emergency escape vessel for the International Space Station.
