If my wedding invite says "Jen + guest", is it appropriate to invite a platonic friend?

A guest is a guest is a guest; whether it is a platonic friend or a "very good friend" : ). As long as this particular person is not on America's Most Wanted List or the Bride's Least Wanted List (the groom's former girlfriend) then there is no problem.
